    Don't think I've heard anyone talking about onions in terms of daylight hours and when the onion starts bulbing. That's quite interesting. Was just looking at some seed websites and they don't seem to list this information on their onion varieties. Some mention terms like early or mid season. Do you consider this particularly important in terms of which varieties you select to grow? Also does it matter when you sow the seeds at all in terms of when the onion starts bulbing up or is daylight hours the main factor?

    • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards День назад

      Yes to all of your questions, it makes a big difference to when and how you grow. It's all covered in my onion growing guide steverichards.notion.site/Individual-growing-guides-bc279089de074c0ab0bfedc4f41d54dd?pvs=4 it's also why it's generally a waste of time to start onions from seed before February, earlier and they will just grow big necks and be unsuitable for storage. It's only worth it if you want to grow big onions to show : All the best - Steve

    Hi Steve, I'm waiting for the nights here to stay in double digits. The weather has been a pain for sure. We've had lots of winds battering things around. • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards 3 дня назад

      I just don’t have the space to wait John, my sowing timeline assume that I will have the summer crops in the ground by the end of May and so I have follow on seedlings needing the greenhouse space. I’m not complaining, harvests of the tender fruits and legumes: summer squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, French beans are strong, peppers will be ready soon. All of the hardy crops are loving the cooler weather and the rain so I’m swamped with harvests : all the best - Steve

    • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards 4 дня назад

      Hi Sandra, there are so many over-optimisers in gardening, if I did that it would take me an hour, I value my time at £40/hour so it would probably cost me in time, more than the value of the whole potato harvest. Any flowers will reduce yield on any root crop, but it usually makes only a very small difference, so for an 80/20 gardener like me, I concentrate on the 20% of activities that have 80% of the effect on harvest size and ignore the other 80%, plus I like looking at the flowers, so I leave them on : All the best - Steve

    Great tour, Steve. Last year, I did what your planning to do with your polytunnel strawberries. They've done well, I'm surprised how well really because I was worried that they'd suffer from being in the same compost. Should I be pinching the flowers off my squash? I've still not put them out. I potted them on and they're still under the grow lights, they look pretty good really but have loads of flowers coming. The weather here has been down to 7 degrees some nights. Its looking up from tomorrow though so planning to plant out this weekend. All the best - Alison

      That's good to know Alison, yes I'd take the flowers off, until the plants are big enough to support growing fruits. @@SteveRichardsMy Strawberry 'experiment' was down to laziness more than anything else. I always intended to shake the roots bare when the plants were dormant and renew the compost, but didn't get round to it. I then decided I might sprinkle some vitax grow organic concentrated manure on, but didn't even do that and they've still done well! I've fed them with tomato feed though, but only every 2 weeks as per instructions on the bottle. Ah that makes sense about the squash panicking. There's me thinking mine were doing well with all their flowers, when actually they're probably stressed. It's going to be next weekend before it's 13 degrees at night here, but they're going out today! Can't hold off any longer. I harvested my first ripe tumblers from the polytunnel baskets on tuesday. Sown on the 9th march. No sign of red profusions ripening, sown on the same day. The plants are humongous like yours were though, tons of flowers! All the best - Alison

Good news about the tomatoes, my polytunnel Tumblers are ripe now too, I think sown same time as yours, but my Red Profusion in the greenhouse are absolutely loaded with ripe fruits this week, so we've had just enough for a month, but now we have abundance, not bad for mid June. when the kale goes to seed for me in the spring, i start harvesting the stalks while still tender for stir fry. They are wonderful and make for an extended harvest and wonderful stir fry veggies. I started doing this a couple of years ago and now look forward to them sprouting seed stems. The more you pick the more they push out new sprouts.

    Beautiful cabbages, I'm lagging behind as usual but at least I'm still managing to harvest dinner from the garden. I'd given up on cabbages but you're insiring me to give another go. Our weather here has been very cold, dull, wet but I've had lovely broad beans, mangtout and potatoes out of the tunnel.

    Always great to see, thanks Steve. We're enjoying lots of Kale rather than cabbage. We don't have enough room for the spring cabbages too, so find that works for us, especially now that there are not many spinach leaves left. The broccoli heads are flowering up beautifully now. Haven't been able to keep up with lettuce output before some gone to seed, but it is wonderful to be able to eat so much of our own produce! Still lots to learn, but enjoying the journey. The hedgehogs in our garden have been doing a great job with the slugs and snails, even our Hosta leaves are intact still! 😁Justine

      We used to be all kale, kalettes and Brussels rather than cabbages but I’ve gradually realised what a great hedge cabbages are against pests. If we get hit by cabbage aphids or bad whitefly in summer or autumn, we have the cabbages to fall back on. We still grow all of the other brassicas too of course : all the best - Steve

    I have allotment envy. Yours is so tidy. I used strulch last year and the weeds were unbelievably bad so this year we have put woodchip on one of our beds as an experiment. So far not a weed in sight and the plants are doing well despite the skeptics saying it would be too acidic!

    • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards 12 дней назад

      I have wood chip on all of my perennial beds, but strulch is easier to remove and bag up in autumn, when it's not needed. If you already have weeds growing, they will definitely push through strulch, but new weed seeds won't germinate on it, so it stop weeds blowing in. I'm too busy for an untidy plot, keeps my time down to an hour a day : All the best - Steve

    Hi Steve, I have a question for your next Q&A. Do you know much about photoperiodism? Do you factor in the photoperiodism of certain plants in your planting plans?

    • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards 12 дней назад

      it's a very interesting subject and not very well documented so far as I can find. The influence of day length, light intensity, plant age, plant size at critical day lengths, temperature and stress on a plant can be quite complex. I'm actually working on a spreadsheet right now to figure out how I'm going to minimally manipulate day length and temperature in the greenhouse (since I have heat and light in there) this winter, so maximise yield, avoid plants going to seed, break dormancy early and all sorts of other objectives. I already do all the basics in my plans, but I think there's exciting potential to go further : All the best - Steve

    I was going to ask about the make & model of greenhouse but I see you've covered that in the link. Thanks for passing on your knowledge & experience. Regarding heating costs; I reckon my 15" x 24" propagator costs about £9 to run for 3 months, so £60 for an 8' x 14' greenhouse is value for money indeed, even if the desired temperature is lower.

    • @SteveRichards
      @SteveRichards 13 дней назад

      The beauty of heating the whole greenhouse is how little effort is needed on my part, if I value my time (which I do) then it's ridiculously efficient compared to any other option : All the best - Steve
